Turning Symptoms into Solutions

I was sent this encouraging message from my good friend Marc Sachnoff, President/Founder of SoundWise at
www.soundwiseonline.com and thought it was worth sharing with you!

This year has been one of historic change, dramatic challenges and just plain tough sledding all around. But as a committed optimist I look forward to 2009 with these hopes for our nation, our species and our planet.

In Business and Finance – Let's move from a culture of greed to a culture of service. If more business folks cared about the folks on the receiving end of their products and services there'd be a lot fewer Madoff's and AIG's in our future.

In Medicine – Let's return the healing arts to healing. Let's move the focus of medicine from bean counters, corporate hospitals and insurance actuaries back to compassionate care for individuals by doctors, nurses and staff.

In Politics – Let's say goodbye to divisiveness, secrecy, partisanship, corruption and bloated egos and move towards openness, consensus, dialogue and cooperation. I know that's asking a lot, but a whole new generation of people are looking to our new and returning leaders at every level to raise the bar high and keep it high.

In Food – My smart aleck friend says Americans today only want the "microwavable, ready to eat, precooked middle of every experience – we don't want to know where it came from or where it's going when we're done with it." This year let's move from mindless cravings to conscious eating, giving thought to all those who worked to make our cornucopia of foodstuffs available – and where it's going afterwards via trash and flush.

In Wealth and Commerce – Let's move from a culture of "more" to a culture of "just enough." Somehow we've allowed ourselves to be hypnotized into believing more is better. It's time for us to wake up from that delusional dream. To brazenly change the old Rod Stewart lyric -- "If you can't get the stuff you want…love the stuff you're with."

In Media – With unprecedented amounts of airtime and endless media outlets to fill, let's move from a media that's infatuated with the temporary and the superficial to one that delves deeper into that which is both timely and important. From one that uses individual tragedy as a sales tool into one that can bring a message of hope, truth, wonder and possibility.

In Religion and International Relations – In 2009 let's move from a world divided by suspicion, tribalism and hatred into one of acceptance, respect, dialogue and trust. Of the billions of people on this planet, only a tiny few fan the flames of hate. Yet parched of hope, millions easily become tinder in the global conflagration. Now, more than ever, we must build bridges of hope and trust based on dialogue, discovering what we have in common first before facing our inevitable differences. The world, our children and the future depend on this.

I am heartened to know that much of what I seek above is already happening. Sometimes on a large scale, in other cases person to person. As I have written previously on our blog: http://blog.soundwiseonline.com/uncategorized/how-change-happens-on-this-planet/, change on this planet comes primarily from pain and coercion. But there is hope in the air. Let us keep it aloft with a million large and small actions.

Wishing you a New Year filled with hope, joy, health, compassion, courage and friendship.

Warmly,

DRD
