Complementary Treatments for Mesothelioma
Exposure to naturally occurring mineral called asbestos has been decided to be one of the only known
causes of mesothelioma, a rare and very aggressive cancer. This type of cancer affects the mesothelial cells that make up the lining of the lungs, heart and abdomen. Treatment options are often limited as this cancer is normally not diagnosed until it is in advanced stages. This is mainly because obvious symptoms can take anywhere from 20 to 50 years to being showing.
Conventional treatments for
malignant pleural mesothelioma are pretty much the typical treatments for most types of cancer: chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. But, there are a number of alternative and complementary treatments that can be used as a form of pain management, to improve general health, and to provide relief from mesothelioma symptoms or side effects from conventional treatments like chemotherapy.
One useful alternative treatment for mesothelioma is aromatherapy. For this type of treatment, fragrances are applied in liquids called essential oils, which are thick and extremely concentrated plant-based oils. These are combined and used by aromatherapists to provide pain relief, symptomatic relief, and improve general well-being for patients.
Acupuncture is another helpful treatment for this type of cancer and is one of the most widely-accepted alternative therapies in use today; so much so in fact that many insurance companies offer coverage for this type of treatment. It can provide relief from chronic pain, inflammation, anxiety, and stress, and is one of the most common alternative treatments used by those with asbestosis, a disease with very similar symptoms to pleural mesothelioma.
Dietary supplements can be beneficial as well. Vitamins, minerals, and amino acids are all needed by the body to carry out crucial life functions, and supplements can help supply required chemicals when diet alone cannot. Many herbs can help treat diseases and conditions, as well as provide symptomatic relief. For example, flaxseed, ginseng, and garlic are all known to reduce blood pressure.
Always consult your doctor before taking any additional supplements as mixing some of these with pharmaceutical drugs can have negative side effects.
